10th Summer School on Atmospheric Aerosol Physics,
Measurement, and Sampling
From: 2 May 2014
To: 9 May 2014
Place: Hyytiälä Forest Station

This summer school is an advanced course to deepen the training aspects for atmospheric aerosol measurements. It will cover the following fields: Physical, mechanical, and electrical properties, sampling, particle filters, impactors, mobility and aerodynamic size spectrometers, particle counters, integrating nephelometer, absorption photometers, online mass measurements, aerosol mass spectrometer, artefact-free sampling, and aerosol dryers.
Deadline for applications: March 10, 2014
Lecturers:  Prof. Dr. Kaarle Hämeri, University of Helsinki, Finland
Prof. Dr. Alfred Wiedensohler, Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, Germany / GAW-World Calibration Centre for Aerosol Physics (WCCAP)
Dr. Jean-Philippe Putaud, Joint Research Centre, Italy
Target group:  This course is mainly intended for Ph.D students, young scientists, and personnel from aerosol measuring stations involved in CRAICC, ACTRIS, GAW, GUAN, PEGASOS, and EMEP. The topics are interactively presented and discussed in English. Good English in understanding and speaking as well as basic aerosol knowledge is required.
We will reward 4 ETCS for successful participation.
Co-Funding:  The course is organized within the frame of the EU-project ACTRIS as well as  GAW-WCCAP, iLEAPS, the National ACCC Doctoral Programme, the Nordic Graduate School “Biosphere-Carbon-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions” (CBACCI), Nordic Master’s Degree Programme “Atmosphere-Biosphere-Studies” (ABS), and the "Centre of Excellence in Atmospheric Acience - From Molecular and Biological Processes to the Global Climate".
Participation costs:  The full fee of the course is 1500 € and includes full boarding (breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee, dinner, and evening meal), accommodation in two person bedrooms and the transfers between Helsinki and Hyytiälä. University students enrolled in degree programs get a 60% discount (student discount price 600 €). The ATM-DP Doctoral Program covers the course fee for doctoral students enrolled in Helsinki university, and the Nordic ABS Master's Degree Program covers the course fee for master students enrolled in universities in Nordic (including other Finnish university than Helsinki university) and Baltic countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden).
There are also a limited number of travel grants available for participants from Nordic and Baltic countries (Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden)
Poster:  Each participant should present a poster about the current or future work, including their expectations of the summer school.
Application:  The applications for the course will be done electronically using the following link:
