1st ACTRIS WP2 - WP20 Workshop
From: 29 Nov 2011
To: 1 Dec 2011
Place: IMK-IFU, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
Details:

Venue:  The workshop will be held at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research - Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMK - IFU) Kreuzeckbahnstrasse 19, 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany Tel.: +49 8821 183-101, Fax: +49 8821 183-103
(see below for detailed travel info).

The institute has two seminar rooms, a large one for the main sessions and a smaller one for separate discussions. Both rooms are equipped with beamers. Internet access is possible (but must be requested when you register).
Registration:  Please register by sending an email to Thomas Trickl (cf. local contact info), specifying:
  1. If you wish to participate in the optional excursion to the Schneefernerhaus Environmental Research Station (Dec 2nd), see below for more information.
  2. If you need internet access during the workshop. In this case please communicate your full affiliation. Please request internet access
only in case you really need it, as the system capacity is limited.
Local Contact:
  • Thomas Trickl, KIT / IMK-IFU, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Tel. +49-8821-183-209, Tel. +49-8821-73573, E-mail: thomas.trickl@kit.edu
Programme:  The updated workshop agenda is available for download here.
Accommodation:  Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a highly touristic place. There are plenty of hotels and guest houses that can be accessed via internet. None of the hotels are really close to IFU. Unfortunately, during the workshop period many of the hotels are closed. Block reservations with special rates are made at the following hotels:
  • Hotel Garmischer Hof, Chamonixstr. 10, Tel.: +49-8821-911-0, Fax: +49-8821-5144-0, hotel@garmischer-hof.de
The hotel is located in the centre of Garmisch, not far from the railway station. The block
reservation will be open until October 15 (key word: EARLINET workshop). The special room
rates are 55 €/night for a single room and 80 € for a double room, including breakfast. 15 single
rooms and 24 double rooms are reserved (this does not mean a limitation since the hotel
has considerably more space and not many other guests are likely in November). Early booking is recommended!
  • Hotel Haus Hammersbach, Kreuzeckweg 2-6, 82491 Grainau, Tel.: +49-8821-983-0, Fax: + +49-8821-983-400 info@haus-hammersbach.de
Haus Hammerbach is an excellent hotel. It is connected to IFU via a straight trail about 1.5 km long. Also
the Zugspitzbahn (train) can be taken (one station). The prices are, however, considerably higher, it is the coldest spot in the valley and Garmisch-Partenkirchen is more remote.

Travel Info:  Travel to IFU

The institute is outside the town, next to the Kreuzeck ski area. There is bus transfer from and to Garmisch-Partenkirchen during a major part of the day. The last bus returns to Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 6:01 p.m. If the sessions end later another bus line can be reach after a walk of about 1 km.

Busses in Garmisch-Partenkirchen:
IFU is reached from the railway station (Bahnhof) or Chamonixstrasse by bus line 2. It is located a few metres away from station "Hammersbacher Fussweg". Line 1 is mostly the same, but the final section is different: You leave the bus at "Breitenau". The walking distance from the Breitenau station to IFU is about 1 km. The busses run at large, not equal intervals. The Line-2 bus most suitable for the workshop leaves the railway station at 8:31 and arrives at IFU at 8:46. On the way back, the last line-2 bus leaves IFU at 18:01. Line 1 leaves Breitenau also later, until 21:03. The difference is explained by the end of the operating hours of the cable cars that are served by Line 1.

Download the bus time tables GAP->IFU and IFU->GAP. A map of the buslines is shown below (click to enlarge):

Travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen

By train:
Trains to Garmisch-Partenkirchen leave Munich Main train station typically at x:32, every hour. The travel time is less than 1,5 h. If you already travel to Munich by train, there is the option to reach the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in München-Pasing (to save time).

By plane:
From Munich Airport you can get to Munich Main train station by suburban trains (S1 or S8). The train station is located between Terminal 2 (Star Alliance) and Terminal 1 (other air lines). Look for the large green S symbol. When using S8 you can optionally go as far as München-Pasing and reach the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with less walking. You can do the same when using S1, but this requires another intermediate change at Laim station (shorter time, but more complex effort!). Train tickets for the entire ride may be purchased at the airport, above the train station.

By car:
Garmisch-Partenkirchen can be reached from Munich by car via motorway A95 (86 km to IFU). After leaving the tunnel around Farchant, shortly before reaching Garmisch-Partenkirchen, turn right and follow signs labelled Garmisch, Reutte or Fernpass. At the final travel light of Garmisch you see the road signs "Alpspitz(e)","Kreuzeck". Turn to the left and enter Kreuzeckbahnstrasse. You will soon see the institute across the meadow.
Meals:  Two restaurants are within walking distance (tbc if open during the workshop period), otherwise a cold lunch will be organized. Coffee and sweets will be provided by the institute.

A workshop dinner will be organized. Details will be made available at a later stage.
Optional Activities:  Anyone interested in one of the following excursions should contact Thomas Trickl (see contact details above) or at registration.

(1) Visit of lidar systems at IFU

A tour of the lidar systems at IFU can be given during intervals or after the end of the sessions on one of the days. Three of the five systems are currently operated (aerosol and ozone) including the two EARLINET systems.

(2) Visit of the Schneefernerhaus high-altitude station (Dec 2, morning)
The sixth lidar system of IFU, a water-vapour DIAL, is operated at the top floor (2675 m a.s.l.) of the Schneefernerhaus research station just below the Zugspitze summit. In addition, a highpower Raman lidar for stratospheric water vapour and temperature is under construction in the same laboratory. A visit would require half a day and should take place after the workshop (December 2). Fair weather is desirable because a view from Zugspitze (2962 m a.s.l.) is quite spectacular as it comprises most of the northern part of the Eastern Alps (from Großglockner to Piz Bernina). However, due to different departure times there will be little flexibility for shifting the visit to other days. The temperatures in December are arctic at that altitude. Be prepared to bring warm clothes and boots.
Tickets are very expensive. Thomas can negotiate a better price for the round trip around 31 € via the Schneefernerhaus staff. A bottleneck is the new cable car to the research station (0.5 km) that is much smaller than the old one and carries just 8 persons.
Other:  Download workshop information as pdf document.

Further details will be communicated in due time.
